This was a lovely first day in Alaska journey….out to the Matanuska Glacier! :) 24 miles of ice that moves 1 foot per day…which direction, though, we aren’t sure??

This is the muddy, rocky strip of land before getting to the glacial ice. That doesn’t stop these lovely ladies, though! Bring on the mud!

Lana is at home on this icy terrain. She has learned a lot about how ice has shaped the landscape here in Alaska. Water in all it’s forms is powerful and has a great impact on the shape and contours of the planet.

Yes, this was the easiest way to traverse this sometimes slippery behemoth of ice, that Matanuska Glacier. This was about an hour’s drive from Palmer…a scenic tour of the mountains, rivers, and trees. So refreshing!

With all the tiny rocks in the Matanuska Glacier, there surely must be some fiber content in it. It was cold, duh….and such crystal-goodness! Pure and fresh!

Wow! The binoculars really help to bring all the vast open space right up close. Our newly minted glaciologist was out scoping the horizon for signs of climate change….

Climbing this far onto the Matanuska Glacier was exhilarating! The ice was alive with melting water, bubbling air, and the sounds of nature. What a great day!
